POSTAL SERVICE SETS HOLIDAY MAILING GUIDELINES TO TROOPS

Postal service sets holiday mailing guidelines
By Samantha L. Quigley, American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON (AFRNS) -- As the holidays approach and people start thinking about what they are going to send loved ones and friends serving overseas, there are a few dates to keep in mind.

"The earliest deadline is for troops that are serving in the Iraq [and] Afghanistan area," said Al DeSarro, spokesman for the western region of the U.S. Postal Service.  "You want to send all your holiday mail andpackages [to those areas] by Dec. 4."

Holiday mail, including packages and cards, going to military bases in other parts of the world should be shipped by Dec. 11, he said.

"We do encourage people to closely follow these deadlines," Mr. DeSarro said.  "Of course, we make every attempt, even if you miss the deadline, to deliver the mail to our troops."

People who cannot beat those dates have another option to get holiday goodies to their destinations in time:  Express Mail.  But it will cost a bit more and it is not available for military members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Priority mail flat-rate boxes are the best value when shipping to military members serving at home or anywhere overseas, Mr. DeSarro said. The largest flat-rate box costs $10.95 to ship to an APO or FPO address. That is a $2 discount, and the boxes are free.

The flat-rate boxes come with another bonus.  If it will fit in the box, and weighs 70 pounds or less, it ships at the established rate.

"We also offer a special military package kit, ... and this applies even if you want to send to our troops here in the U.S.," Mr. DeSarro said. "If you call ... 1-800-610-8734, they'll send you a free kit of
packaging materials -- priority mail boxes, tape, labels and stuff that can make your holiday packing much easier."

When shipping any holiday package, there are some basic guidelines to take into consideration, he added.  If a USPS-provided box is not being used, senders should make sure the box they're using is sturdy.  Don't use wrapping paper or string on the outside, and print both the shipping and return addresses clearly.  Contents should be packaged securely and in leak-proof containers, and consider the customs of the country to ensure the items are appropriate and acceptable.

USPS officials also suggests including the mailing address, return address and the contents of the box on a slip of paper with the other contents, just in case something out of the ordinary should happen.

Following not only the shipping date guidelines, but also the general packing guidelines can help the USPS get packages where they are going during their busiest time of the year.

Mr. DeSarro urges people to mail as much as they want and as early as they can, adding that officials expect 20 million pounds of mail will be sent to U.S. troops this holiday season.

STAND DOWN FOR HOMELESS VETERANS - November 5 - 6

DeBakey VA Medical Center, in cooperation with the City of Houston - Convention & Entertainment Facilities Department, City of Houston - Office of Veterans Affairs, Coalition for the Homeless, George R. "Stand Down" is military terminology referring to the brief period of time a soldier leaves an active combat area in order to rest and regain strength.  The Houston Area Stand Down will bring a wide range of specialized resources together to provide homeless veterans with comprehensive medical and psychosocial services.   Stand Down can be an opportunity for the homeless veteran to access a broad spectrum of services at one convenient location and to create a plan for re-entry into mainstream society.

Stand Downs are one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs' efforts to provide services to homeless veterans.  Stand Downs are typically one to three day events providing services to homeless veterans such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to a variety of other necessary services, such as housing, employment and substance abuse treatment.

MARINE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION FUND RAISER - November 9

MCSF Event to Raise Glasses & Money for Children of the Corps

Houston - Where can you enjoy fine wines and help make a difference in the life of a Marine's child at the same time? One Houston Center, in downtown Houston. On Sunday evening, November 9th, 2008, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation will hold it's first-ever Salut! to the Corps wine tasting and fundraiser event at One Houston Center, and the organization is looking for support from fellow Marines.

Mark your calendars and save the date, because Salut! to the Corps is sure to be a good time for anyone thirsting for a chance to taste quality food, wines and other adult beverages from local vendors, and raise scholarship money for the children of Marines. All net proceeds from the event will go the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, who in turn will award college scholarships to children of Marines here in Houston.

Since 1962, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than $34 million in scholarships to children of Marines. The organization's mission is "Honoring Marines by Educating Their Children," and it's a task that is taken very seriously. "Supporting the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is a tangible way to say thank-you and to honor the brave men and women who serve in our beloved Corps," says Lt. Gen. Jeffrey W. Oster, USMC (Ret.). "Your investment in the future of the children of Marines not only creates greater opportunities for them, it also makes for a stronger America."

Marines and their friends and families are invited and encouraged to get involved in the cause by attending Salut! to the Corps on November 9th, and spreading the word about what the MCSF can do for local, college-bound children of Marines. You can help the MCSF raise money at Salut! To the Corps by serving as a volunteer or sponsor at the event and encouraging others to do the same. For more information on the MCSF, including scholarship eligibility requirements, stories from recipients or how to donate, go to www.mcsf.org. OPERATION FREE FOR THE BRAVE DAY - November 11

Join with us as we salute all Veterans and Armed Services members on Tuesday, November 11th, 2008 with free Bubbles Express Car Washes!

On Tuesday, November 11, 2008 Bubbles Express will offer free car washes to any Houstonian who has served in any branch of the armed forces of the United States of America.  This special Veterans Day salute will take place at all Bubbles Express locations in the greater Houston area.  The company has dubbed the initiative "Operation Free for the Brave" Day.

Bubbles believes that every citizen of this country as well as our geographic neighbors and allies abroad owe a debt of gratitude to these brave men and women, and we're doing to do what we can to say 'Thank you' in a small, but hopefully significant way.  Frankly, turning over a day of operations is the least we can do to acknowledge their loyal service.

Bubbles will honor all those who claim this status, and will waive the need for any documentation or proof of service. For all those who participate in uniform, Bubbles would like to take their picture and post it on our website as a tribute to these great men and women.

Interested patrons are encouraged to visit BubblesCarWash.com for locations and hours of operation.

In addition, ALL HOUSTONIANS are encouraged to visit any Bubbles location and spend as much as possible... Bubbles will be donating 50% of all proceeds to the USO. Please join us on this very special day... Thank you. William Lawrence, Chairman

HOUSTON MILITARY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The Houston Military Affairs Committee was formed in 1931 as part of the Chamber of Commerce and is now an independent 501-c-3 non-profit organization. HMAC is a member of the Greater Houston Partnership.

HMAC is dedicated to supporting the military and veterans in the greater Houston area.  This is accomplished by conducting the Annual Armed Forces Day Military Ball as a benefit to support the USO which helps our servicemen locally and in transit at our two airports.  We are resuming ROTC/JROTC awards, as well as serviceperson-of-the-year awards to honor our outstanding active, reserve, and guard enlisted personnel.

Other efforts include our web site http://www.HMAC.us and this weekly Email to inform about military and veterans activities in the region.

All of these projects require the help of many people and we ask you to join to assist in these efforts.  An application is available at the HMAC web site http://www.HMAC.us
